On swampy land near the Rhône, Baron des Adrets decided in the 16th century to create a military square, which a century later transformed into a public square and the heart of Lyon. Place Bellecour, one of Europe's largest squares, is lined with numerous shops and cafes, making it a pleasant meeting and strolling spot.

Every winter, the city center comes alive with light projections, turning the holiday season into a magical event that's a must-see for lovers of light festivals.

Lyon is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
